250-sma-inc.us your name is not [10.0.1.20] ...

The usual response is "250-sma-inc.us we trust you [10.0.1.20]".

Only if the ACTUAL connection is coming from a recognized client IP. It may also have to match the IP literal given, but at a minimum "we trust you" from CGP only gets sent to client IPs.

Why
would CGP respond with "your names is not [10.0.1.20]"?

Because the name of 72.208.72.31 isn't '[10.0.1.20]'

HOWEVER: No MUA should ever be tryng to interpret any part of a response to EHLO other than the 3-digit reply code, whether it is followed in a line by a space or hyphen, and what is in the list of extensions.

And, apparently,
the MUA is offended by that.

Since you said it was Apple Mail, I find that extremely unlike. Mail.app is a pile of garbage in many ways, but that is not one of them.

What does the Mail.app "Connection Doctor" say the problem is?
