The problem with this approach is that all messages show up as "from"  the intended recipient. And, all subjects show up either as "new  message" or "sent message" so you have to open each message to see  who actually sent it and what the subject is. Importing an entire  mailbox of these records would be irritating to  download and read.

We have used rsync for years and it works great, but can be CPU and Disk intensive if you have many G's of mail on a very active server.  In these situations start rsync daemon with low priority.
