You could use an external helper to convert the string to something else.
Have you tried that?

spam scoring software use a character other than an asterisk [*] for the
scoring header.
I asked the provider of the spam filter already, but it not clear if it will become
configurable at a later date, nor what that later date will be. For the time being
they suggested to ask if the mailer software could not escape the wildcard.
Most mailers have escapes for meta-characters.
From both parties I had expected more flexibility.
Stalker could have guessed that there might be a need to match asterisks.
(Similar for the comma in lists.)
The provider of the spam filter could have guessed that an asterisk
is not the best choice because it is not easy to match.
Both of them could create some more flexibility to work around this problem,
but none of them has it now. So, we can only hope that one of them will do something.
Currently, I see no solution.
