CGP 5.1.16 on OSX5.6, accounts set up as mbox

Just for preparation when the unwanted happens... (Knock on wood)

1. What is the best poliicy if a crashed server would be needed to be
restored from a backup?

virtual scenario:

8 pm server is down, needs to be restored
last usable backup is may be several hours old
its assumed that between time of backup and crash users have received
mails they didn't collect.

version A: server cannot start, but his HD is still readable
Recovery strategy: restore from backup, replace the backuped Communigate
folder by the one from the still readable HD. Effect: no mails are lost
(Or is it better only to replace the accounts folders? What about queues?)

version B: total crash of HD, unreadable.
Recovery stratgey: restore from last possible backup (e.g. TimeMachine).
Mails that have arrived between backup and crash are definetively lost.

Are my thoughts resonable?

2. Merging mbox

A POP-user has unwantedly deleted mails. In the server backup they still
are. But the actual mbox has new mails which the backup file  hasn't.
The mbox files cannot simply be exchanged.

Whats the easiest way to restore  the deleted mails?

How do other experts handle these situations?

Thanks for hints
