I carry a USB stick with portable Thunderbird on it. Whenever I am near a remote PC I use that. If a PC isn't available (rare) I fall back to a basic webskin (Pronto too slow). I use the Zindus plugin to synchronize contacts between Thunderbird and a gmail account (not CGP). This keeps my desktop and portable Thunderbird copies in sync. Because I use Google as a spam trap it also automatically whitelists any email addresses. And if I have a random need to find a contact without a mail client I can always get it from gmail.
