All of the plumbing is there with Chronos.  You can get the alerts
by IM or via a phone call.  You can probably create a real-time rule
to ping you via email.

Sounds to me very much like a job for an external script running as
a scheduled task (Windows) or from cron (Linux, UNIX).

I'd hazard a guess that something in Perl using the CLI or XIMSS
would work, as long as it can parse the calendar data. In fact, I'd
hazard another guess that this probably already exists somewhere!
