The problem is that there is NO 500 (or 5XX) error being sent back, but merely that the connection is dropped at TCP/IP level. Hence SIMS thinks that a transport error occurred and doesn't consider it an attempt. The mail server at the other end is broken.

That may be, but SIMS still made an attempt. You'd think it should increment the Attempts Made counter accordingly, even if it never contacted the other mail server at all.

As an aside, one of the 10 Mb+ file in my Queue that exhibited this problem has gone away, so it appears that SIMS is deleting them after five days or so anyway.

That's an excellent and plausible explanation for what I'm seeing. Shouldn't SIMS be able to see that 500 error and bounce the email back to the sender with it?

Actually, I'd love it if SIMS could look at the size of an email as soon as it arrives in the Queue and bounce oversize (configurable) ones back without a single attempt. I currently have two 10 Mb + messages in the Queue and if what you're saying is true they'll just be there until I blow them away which doesn't tell the (ab)user anything.

This problem occurs when the mail server at the other end sees the large mail coming in and once it gets over the mailbox limit or message size limit instead of sending something like

500 This message is way too big!

It just drops the connection. This leads SIMS to believe that the attempt was not completed and it doesnt increment. A prime offender for this problem is as I found out when someone thought it would be a bright idea to send a 10MB mail to 50+ recipients, half of them at hotmail. SIMS tried to deliver that email until I killed it in the queue.

I posted something about this recently and it's occurring again. Occasionally, a user will attempt to mail a large (10 Mb+) attachment and it will sit in SIMS's queue with Attempts Made stuck at 0. SIMS is obviously making attempts, because you can see the Status as Transmitting from time to time and the traffic out of the server shows a large, regular increase with each attempt.

Any idea why the Attempts Made counter wouldn't increment?

For bonus points, is there any way to bounce the offending email with whatever message the far end is giving before the retry limit is reached (if it ever does, with the Attempts made no obviously incrementing).
