This message is coming from comet.bluemarble.net, even though SIMS at
my domain (theagateworkshop.com) insists that comet.bluemarble.net
doesn't exist. Can SOMEONE explain why?

Because there is no MX record for comet.bluemarble.net.  It has an A record, but no MX record.  Many mail servers will look up the A record if the MX record doesn't exist, and try using it.  But, the missing MX record is a problem at that domain.

SIMS will accept either an MX or an A record in the Return-Path check.
